The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) released the Report on EU New Vehicle Registration Data for September 2025. From January to September 2025, the number of new vehicle registrations in the EU increased slightly by 0.9% year-on-year, achieving three consecutive months of growth. The month of September alone saw a significant year-on-year surge of 10%.
From the perspective of power types, the electrification transformation continues to deepen, but the performance of different technical routes varies significantly.
  • From January to September 2025, the number of battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations reached 130,200 units, with a stable market share of 16.1%.

  • Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have become the absolute main force, accounting for a 34.7% market share with 279,310 registered units. They continue to be favored by consumers due to their advantages of balancing fuel economy and usability.

  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) achieved outstanding growth, with 72,290 registered units. Their market share rose from 6.9% in 2024 to 9%, driven mainly by sales growth in key markets such as Spain, Germany, and Italy.

In sharp contrast, traditional fuel vehicles continue to shrink. From January to September 2025, the number of gasoline vehicle registrations fell by 18.7% year-on-year, and their market share dropped from 34.4% to 27.7%. Diesel vehicles saw an even larger decline, with registrations falling by 24.7% year-on-year and their market share remaining at only 9.3%.
Gasoline vehicle registrations in France plummeted by 32.8%, and major markets such as Germany, Italy, and Spain also saw double-digit declines. The trend of fuel vehicles withdrawing from the market is irreversible.
In terms of regional markets, the four core EU markets showed differentiated performance.
  • As a core consumer market for BEVs, Germany saw a significant year-on-year increase of 38.3% in BEV registrations from January to September 2025, with HEVs also growing by 10.6%.

  • France recorded a slight 0.2% decrease in BEV registrations, but its HEV market led with a 28.8% growth rate.

  • Spain performed prominently in the PHEV sector, with a growth rate of 105.2%, while its HEV market also grew by 28.1%.

  • Italy achieved steady growth in both the PHEV (+72.6%) and HEV (+9.2%) markets.

Leading automotive groups maintain a solid position, while emerging brands are rising rapidly.
  • Volkswagen Group remains the top in the EU market with a 27.2% market share, and its Skoda and Cupra brands achieved significant growth.

  • Stellantis Group and Renault Group followed closely with market shares of 15.0% and 11.3% respectively.

  • Chinese brands delivered an outstanding performance: BYD’s registrations in the EU market reached 25,000 units, a year-on-year surge of 272.1%, while SAIC Group also achieved strong growth of 79.2% with 34,000 units sold.
